The online B.S. in Applied Health Sciences will prepare you to serve better health and well-being through foundational evidence-based studies. Students will study health-focused and core sciences, alongside explorations of healthcare administration and public health. Students can choose a specialized area of focus, such as science, psychology, public health or business, to effectively position program learning toward their career pursuits. Graduates are prepared for a number of careers including healthcare educator, clinical manager, pharmaceutical and medical sales, wellness consultant and many others.

Course Spotlights

HS 302 Global Health

This course provides an overview of the determinants of health and how health status is measured. Students review the burden of disease, who is most affected by different disease burdens, risk factors, and key measures to address the burden of disease in cost-effective ways. Special attention is paid throughout the course to health systems issues. The course covers key concepts and frameworks but is practical in orientation. It is also global in coverage but with a focus on low- and middle-income countries, the health of the poor, equity, inequality, and health disparities. The course emphasizes the linkages between health and development.

SC 339 Nutrition, Disease, and Lifespan

In this class, students will categorize and prioritize nutritional needs and behaviors based on life stage issues and integrate them into appropriate dietary considerations and practices. By the end of the course, students will evaluate and design nutritional plans from five categories of disease using developmental science, understanding of disease models, and behavioral interventions across individuals’ lifespans.

HS 311 Healthcare Management and Organization

This course will introduce junior year students to the complexity of healthcare organizations and how they are managed. An overview of the historical development of the modern healthcare organization, as well as the contemporary management roles and functions within them, will be reviewed. Measuring performance and quality improvement will also be taught. The importance of the roles of physicians, nurses, as well as other professionals and support staff will be highlighted. Theories of healthcare leadership will also be explored.

PY 320 The Psychology of Nourishment and Wellness

In this class, students will study sensory process disorders and eating disorder types, symptoms and treatments; how foods affect mental health; mindfulness practices; elements of cognitive behavioral therapy; and explain human motivation as it relates to nourishment and wellness. By the end of the course, students will have an intermediate understanding of factors that affect health/wellness perceptions and how the factors influence lifestyle and dietary practices.
